PARKERSBURG – No. 4 Cabell Midland no longer boasts an undefeated record against in-state opponents.
The Knights could not contain Kisten Roberts Kisten Roberts 5'10" | C Parkersburg | 2022 State WV and Trinity Balog as they left Parkersburg with a 64-49 loss to the Big Reds.
Roberts scored 15 points and Balog tallied 14 more as the Knights never regained the lead after 10-9. Jazmyn Wheeler Jazmyn Wheeler 6'1" | PF Cabell Midland | 2023 State WV tallied a team-high 23 points for the visitors.
Things started out fast for both teams in a game that saw just 15 players check on to the court. The teams battled back and forth to an early 13-13 tie before the Big Reds took the lead for good at 16-13.
Here are scouting reports on four of the game’s top players:
Cabell Midland
Team MVP – Jazmyn Wheeler Jazmyn Wheeler 6'1" | PF Cabell Midland | 2023 State WV : The Knights’ super sophomore did her thing during the setback. She kept her team in the game with big shot after big shot. When she wasn’t on the floor, it wasn’t clear where the scoring would come from. Two of her biggest shots, a fourth-quarter two and 3, gave her team a few more chances to even the score.
In addition to her points, she grabbed seven rebounds.
Rylee Allie Rylee Allie 5'4" | PG Cabell Midland | 2022 State WV : The senior may not have scored a lot (six points on two 3s), but the point guard helped her team in other ways. Namely, during a night when her group faced a daunting press, she brought the ball up the floor with nary an 8-second call. Her defense also helped hound PHS ball handlers.
She also put her teammates in position to score easy buckets with several pretty passes. Though she only “officially” finished the night with three assists, there could’ve been plenty more.
Parkersburg
Team MVP: Kisten Roberts/Trinity Balog – Much like Wheeler, there were times where these two Big Reds stood out as the best player on the floor.
Kisten Roberts Kisten Roberts 5'10" | C Parkersburg | 2022 State WV – Roberts, who has experienced an up-and-down season to this point, had a good night against the Knights. Tasked with rotating in the paint on defense with Balog against the Knights’ taller KK Potter KK Potter 6'0" | PF Cabell Midland | 2022 State WV , she held her own helping limit her assignment to six points and five boards.
On the other end of the floor, she tacked on several late shots, thus keeping the Knights at bay.
In addition to her points and defense, Roberts helped the Big Reds’ rebounding effort by pulling down four boards.
Trinity Balog – Balog came out hot from the start. It’s as simple as that. Thanks to her ability to consistently find the rim along with penetrating the lane, she created easy kick out opportunities for her teammates. Most of the time, her teammates hit those shots.
When she wasn’t creating for her girls, she dipped into her bag finishes around the hoop.
Balog proved effective in slowing Potter down on the offensive side of the court. Her bulk and fiery attitude made it hard for the Knight to square up to the basket in the paint.
She also finished with a pair of boards and two steals.
