It doesn’t take me long to recognize talent, I’m not a novice and I base things on how it used to be and the portal wouldn’t be full by using that logic yet that’s another story but here’s part 1, all are sophomores
2024
Markia Sweat-5’9 F (Huntsville)
Sweat has the right last name because of her smothering defense as well as her “all out” play which translates to one of those “never takes a play off” type of player yet she also rebounds, let me add she’s long and athletic and those rebounds also come against players taller than she is, on both ends of the court but I also liked her ability to not only handle the ball in the open court but the half court as well as she showed she could score and finish off the dribble
Mahalia Twine-5’7 PG (Huntsville)
Twine has SWB, she showed me that over the club season with the Lady Thunder and immediately grabbed my attention watching her zig-zag by defenders and throw passes on the money going full speed yet her speed, especially in the open court also enabled her to score, this includes her playing the passing lane which she does well. She also creates her shot and can knock the outside jumer down but just as important as everything else, she understands how to control the tempo
A’Quarius Howard-5’6 CG (Huntsville)
Howard also has SWB, speed with ball, and that’s important for a number of reasons, especially on the defensive end where she understands how to trap and uses her quick hands to come up with steals, that also helps with her “on the ball” defense yet she can apply pressure baseline to baseline and by having the speed after the steal that usually gives her team scoring opportunities, I saw that before the season with Lady Thunder as well but she can create her shot and drop it from outside
Danae Crosby-5’7 G (Denton Braswell)
Crosby caught my eye at an Individual Showcase a year and a half ago, I love to go back and see what I said and as usual, I was on the money because I mentioned her attacking the basket back then and watching her explode off the dribble at the event and finishing with either hand, after contact, was nice yet so was her athleticism as she used it to apply pressure on defense yet she also understands how to score in the flow, she sees the floor and she even rebounds against taller players
Yves Cox-6’2 P (Denton Braswell)
Cox is “long and athletic” that is the base yet she’s also over “the magic number” which is 6’0, if you don’t follow me you won’t get it yet she definitely gives it on both ends first of all, she plays the passing lane and can handle the ball after the steal but she also has good timing which enables her to make the offensive player change their shot or think about attacking her yet altering shots wasn’t all, she deflected and blocked some and she did a good job maneuvering around the basket to score
Journey Taylor-5’5 G (Denton Braswell)
Taylor plays hard nosed defense and she enjoys applying pressure which trickles over to her teammates but whether it’s her doing the “man-up” full court or forcing players into traps, not to leave out she also has quick hands and plays the passing lane, all of that fits their system but two things just pop into my head over and over and that’s her stop and pop jumper in transition as well as watching her spin on defenders in the open court to score
