Would you go out and bring in a knockdown shooter for your wings? Would you seek a dynamic ball handler, who could run the show as well as put the ball in the rim? Though 5v5 hasn’t changed much in the game, the skill sets of particular positions have.
Gone are the days where a PG is just a facilitator. A shooting guard just shoots. A small forward just mirrors the SG. The power forward plays the high post while the center works the blocks. Nowadays, kids are more dynamic and the game has become somewhat positionless. You still have the same basic positions, but now they do more. Your point guard can conduct the offense and score the ball. The shooting guard doesn’t just score but also can start the offense. The small forward can play inside and out. The power forward can stretch the floor from beyond the arc. The center can go high and work low. So much creativity resides in the game of basketball now, it’s hard to determine what would be the most important piece to build a team around.
So back to my question, how would you build your program? Would you go after guard play first? Would you go after a big anchor in the middle? Where would you start?
