Continue ReadingThe Willamette High Wolverines are absolutely loaded with young talent. The Wolverines are the number one ranked team in 5A only having one loss to South Medford on Jan. 21. They have no senior starters and feature a lineup of mostly freshmen and currently have poll position for a state title.
Maddy Warberg (2025) – Warberg might be the most skilled player on this team with her talents showing up all over the court. She brings an incredible amount of energy on the floor and is easily the emotional leader of this team. On offense she can do it all, driving, shooting, passing seemingly are all-natural skills at this point for Warberg. At 5’10 her length is a huge factor disrupting the opposing teams rhythm and being able to poke the ball away for steals. In the Wolverines’ most recent bout Warberg posted an easy 11 points as Willamette cruised to a 30 point win over Thurston.
Victoria Nguyen (2025) – Nguyen is the main facilitator for this impressive Wolverines squad, standing at 5’5 she isn’t afraid to mix it up with the bigs down low after she’s blown past her defender on the outside. After leaving the defense in the dust a couple of times over the course of the game, Nguyen will pull up and knock down three’s in a fast break or in the flow of the offense. Her size doesn’t limit her on the defensive end either, she is consistently doing the right thing even after being switched onto a post player or bigger wing. While also being a constant thorn in the side of other guards she faces. In an earlier season matchup against then top 5 ranked West Albany, Nguyen had 9 points in the fourth quarter alone to help lift the Wolverines over the Bulldogs.
Brynn Smith (2025) – Another incredible freshman on this roster, Smith is the outside sniper for her squad. She can knock down threes at any spot on the outside and really helps stretch the opponent out defensively to create space for her other teammates. If opponents close out too hard, Smith will put the ball on the floor and get to the hoop for a bucket. Her 5’11 frame makes it hard for opposing offensives to gain any sort of rhythm. Smith has eclipsed double-digit points in a game multiple times and posted a game-high 21 points in a shellacking of league opponent Crater earlier in the season.
Nancy Coffman (2023) – One of the elders on this roster Nancy Coffman is an absolute bruiser in the paint. Coming in around 6’0 the junior is the post anchor for this youthful squad and has a certain tenacity when it comes to rebounding. In her hudl profile, she says “I am a true post, I like the contact of physical play under the basket.” When she isn’t snatching rebounds or holding down the paint on defense, Coffman is cleaning up misses with putbacks and also making well-placed passes to other teammates so they can score. Her consistent aggressiveness is hard for any opposing team to match up for all 32 minutes of game time.
