Only 14 players are named to the KHSAA State Tournament All-Tournament team and yet, 4 freshmen made this year’s All-Tournament team, including the player that was named the MVP of the tournament. A freshman also won Kentucky’s 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year award and Kentucky is tied for the 2nd most nationally ranked freshmen per espnW, so there really is a ton of talent in this class. Here is a look at some of the freshmen that shined this season.
Kate Baker Kate Baker 5'4" | PG Frederick Douglass | 2025 State KY | Frederick Douglass
Baker is a true point guard with a strong skillset. She handles the ball really well and is an outstanding passer. She creates a lot of offense and is very unselfish as a player. Baker is quick and excellent at running the floor. She finishes with both hands around the rim and she’s got good strength. She’s got good pass and shot fakes, and she never backs down. Baker is a very gritty defender and she makes you really work. She has a good looking shot with a quick release. She can do a little bit of everything when she’s on the court and she is an excellent floor general.
Brittany Campbell Brittany Campbell 5'6" | PG Madison Central | 2025 State KY | Madison Central
Campbell just keeps making huge strides and is undoubtably one of the top point guards in the 2025 class. She sees the floor as good as anyone and she makes some fantastic passes. Her passes up the court in transition create a lot of buckets. She is a true playmaker. Campbell is excellent at changing speeds and making it hard for the defense to stay in front. Once she gets to the paint, she can finish around the rim or kick to a teammate. She has a strong pull-up jumper, floater, and outside shot. She could score 15+ a game if she wanted, but she’s all about creating for her team. She shot nearly 40% from deep this season as a freshman and was a major part of Madison Central’s offense even when she was not scoring, as she was either drawing the defense away from a teammate and/or making a pass that created a scoring opportunity for her team.
Claire Roberts Claire Roberts 5'8" | CG Lexington Christian Academy | 2025 State KY | Lexington Christian
Opposing coaches have to prepare for Roberts because she has a great shot and is capable of getting really hot from 3. She could drop double digits in any given game, especially when she’s hitting her shot from deep. Roberts has really good handles and sees the floor well. She plays with a really high motor and that really helps her excel on the defensive end also. She can get to the rim or stop and pop. She catches ready to shoot and she crashes the boards really well. While she led the Lady Eagles multiple times this season, they are graduating their top scorer, so I’d expect Roberts to play an even bigger role for Lexington Christian next season.
Nicole Archibald Nicole Archibald 5'6" | SG Bracken County | 2025 State KY | Bracken County
Archibald certainly does not play like a freshman. Her skillset is impressive and I have a feeling she’ll produce not just a double-double or triple-double, but a quadruple-double by the end of her high school career. She is an excellent passer and she creates a lot of offensive opportunities. She has fantastic court awareness and she is really good at drawing help to create an open shot for her teammates. She is also a good defender and really reads the passing lanes well, coming up with multiple steals nearly every game. She makes some phenomenal moves with the ball in her hands and she really sells her moves. On top of all of that, she is an excellent scorer. Roberts will definitely catch your eyes when you watch her play.
Autumn Simpson Autumn Simpson 5'7" | SG Shelby County | 2025 State KY | Shelby County
Simpson is one of the most pure shooters from deep. She catches ready to fire and can really knock them down. She is great at finding the open spots on the 3-point line, and she seems to know where she is the most consistent and puts herself in those positions. She’s strong on the defensive end and reads the offense to come up with steals. She is very controlled with the ball and she’s excellent at controlling her speed. Simpson also has good ball handling and passing skills. She will continue playing a big role for the Lady Rockets for the next 3 years and I’d expect all of her numbers to get even stronger as time passes.
