Some of the players playing up with older squads are the stand-outs for their teams and that is always fun to see. Take a look at a few of the players who caught my eye so far this morning.
Grace Wehring | 5-5 CG | Just Play Elite / Second Baptist | 2026 | @GraceWehring
Grace put up some big point totals this morning in the 14U division. She showed a great finish in transition that she made look very easy. A lot of times at this level you see players look indecisive or nervous as they approach the rim and begin to feel pressure from the defense. That’s not the case for Wehring. She finished strong and smoothly, often getting the foul as well. In addition to being quick in transition, Grace showed a tremendous ability to stop and pop and was able to contort her body on those shots in a way that managed to draw free throws also. Wehring has a lot of different ways to put points on the board and is a lot of fun to watch.
Kennedy Simpson | 5-7 F | Houston Lady Nets / YES Prep North Forest | 2026 | @kennedyy4x
This is one of the youngsters I was talking about in the intro. An eighth-grader could have easily played in the other division I am covering (14U) and done very well. Instead, Kennedy is playing up against 2024’s and doing a tremendous job. In her team’s most recent game she had 20 points with a lot of them coming from her work in the paint and her great shooting from the charity stripe. She is all heart and hustle as evidenced by a video that I tweeted out earlier where she was blocked from behind following a steal. She picked herself up, got yet another steal, and finished. It was a tremendous display of not only her “wants it,” but also Kennedy’s basketball IQ to know that the opposing guard may have counted her out after she went down behind the play. I look forward to seeing more of Simpson over the course of the weekend.
Cassidy Rodriguez Cassidy Rodriguez 5'4" | PG Clear Falls | 2024 TX | 5-0 PG | Houston Queens Elite / Clear Falls | 2024 | @dc_queens
Wow, this kid was fun to watch. I first wrote that she was a “true” point guard because I saw her ability to handle the ball as well as not get sped up by the defense. She was comfortable taking charge of both the offense and the defense. However, as the game went on and her team was trailing, Cassidy began to use her superior handles to drive to the rim and rack up the buckets. Despite her slight stature, she is a tough guard who is a big-time scorer. A tenacious defender, Rodriguez makes life difficult for her opponent in one-on-one situations and is absolutely relentless at times. She is vocal on defense and seems to be a leader for her squad in a lot of different ways. I’ve heard it said that a point guard’s size does not matter nearly as much as their IQ, hustle, and defensive prowess. If that’s the case, Cassidy Rodriguez Cassidy Rodriguez 5'4" | PG Clear Falls | 2024 TX is going to be a big-time college prospect.
Ivonna Lloyd | 5-2 CG | Texas Cagers Select / Episcopal | 2025
Another youngster playing up who was not intimidated in any way, Ivonna was a spark plug all game long. She showed a preternatural ability to know when to let her shot go. Given an inch of space, Ivonna would rise up and let a midrange jumper or floater go and absolutely racked up the points. She showed quick hands that made life miserable for the opposing guard and got a ton of points through fast breaks. She was a handful all game long and never relented, even with her team leading by a large margin. She worked hard and never stopped communicating on both ends of the floor. Just like Cassidy above, she may be undersized right now, but that is not an issue when it comes to guard play. She can run the point and she can defend just about anyone with her quick hands and quick lateral movement. Lloyd is a big-time prospect with a big-time heart.
