And while it was lightly attended, primarily because numerous programs have not set their squads yet, there was some quality play to watch. Teams from three states gathered at Andover’s Farha YMCA courts to get some action. Enjoy this look at 2023s who stood out.
Jazmin Adams Jazmin Adams 6'1" | PF Putnam City West | 2023 State OK , 6’1″, C, Choctaw (OK). Below The Rim (BTR) 17U- Adams is a big, strong, good IQ center with diverse abilities on both ends of the floor. Yes she rebounded well and cleared the ball well afterward but what I really liked was her ability to score and to read action from the weak side to help. Adams transitioned, caught, and finished well with either hand. She sealed well on the post up and showed good, quick hops off the ORB to rack up points inside or off the 8’ jumper. She walled up very well helping teammates defend in the post and in preventing potential basket attacks. Slighter build defending posts generally could not physically compete well.
Chloe Clevenger Chloe Clevenger 5'6" | PG McPherson | 2023 State KS , CG, McPherson, KS Dream Team (Lady Prospects) – With her club team off this weekend Clevenger jumped in for the weekend. On the finish she showed an ability to show the ball, score the reverse layup, and use the glass well. She is able to convert with either hand.
Leah Durr Leah Durr 5'11" | PF Norwich | 2023 State KS , 6’0″, C, Cheney, KS Dream Team – Durr used her frame, strength, and solid foundation to box and rebound well on both ends. Her offensive game continues to grow as does her ability to elevate around the basket.
Landon Forbes Landon Forbes 5'7" | PG Bishop Carroll | 2023 State KS , Bishop Carroll, SSA Gameball Basketball – Forbes had a some rough patches but she consistently showed strong handles and the ability to handle with speed. She is athletic, can score at all three levels, and used either hand well. Forbes will reach another level of play by getting stronger.
Amaya Gallegos Amaya Gallegos 5'8" | PG Garden City | 2023 State KS , Garden City, SSA Gameball Basketball – Gallegos is getting comfortable as a floor leader with the graduation of a long time running mate. She is very fast with the ball, has strong handles, and lead the break with control. Gallegos avoided the blocked shot on the finish and hit the challenged three. She also generated a bunch of turnovers with her quick hands and feet. Great on the basket attack, I would like to see her drop more dimes rather than force the issue splitting players so often.
Hailey Jackson, 6’0″, SF, Charles Page (OK), @SanditeAthletic, Below The Rim – A physical player who can finish with contact, Jackson is a walking three point play with her good free throw shooting. A very solid defender on the perimeter and inside, oddly has a tendency to lose track of who she is guarding in the mid-lane area by getting caught too high sagging off the ball.
Avery Lowe Avery Lowe 6'3" | PF Maize South | 2023 State KS , 6’1″, PF, Maize South, SSA Gameball Basketball – Shot block without fouling. Able to defend on wing and inside. Takes good mid-range looks but needs to improve consistency making them. Growth in face-up and back-to-basket game evident, puts together multiple moves and able to put ball on the floor to create.
McKayla Miller McKayla Miller 6'1" | CG Cimarron | 2023 State KS , 6’1″, PG, Cimarron, SSA Gameball Basketball – Miller’s length, handles, IQ, height, and offensive game made her a walking mismatch. Teams tried to match her size only to wind up with players being beaten by her speed and quickness. When teams tried to match her quickness and handles, in the end she often just posted them up or otherwise went over them at all three levels. She put multiple moves together, used screen action to set up defender to create the shot/drive/pass she wanted, and went end-to-end off the rebound. Miller continued to show her prowess as a offensive rebounder.
Adyson Scott Adyson Scott 6'0" | SF Stanton County | 2023 State KS , 6’0″, PF, Stanton County, SSA Gameball Basketball – The lengthy Scott finished well with length and showed a quick release in flow off the catch. Transitioned well with speed and moved well without the ball.
Lillie Veer Lillie Veer 5'7" | PG Berean Academy | 2023 State KS , 5’7″, PG, Berean Academy, KS Dream Team – Coming off a loss in Kansas’ class 2A championship Veer did a solid job of showing her diverse game. Not only did she show she can split defenders but also can absorb contact on the finish. Veer created well for others. A great moment was a wrap around dish off the bounce to a teammate on the opposite block.
