I like to say a game cannot be complete without exceptional point guard play. A point guard controls tempo and manages the game. Here are some of the point guards I saw on Day 1 that did all the little things to help their teams be successful.
Yasmise Haygood I 5’6 I PG I 2026 I Q4 Elite 2025
Haygood is a floor general that gets everyone involved on her team. Her court vision is superior as she always keeps her head on a swivel. When the defense comes to help on the drive, she does a great job of dumping down to her teammates on the block. Hard to believe she is only in middle school as her basketball IQ screams upperclassman. A game changer that had 16 points in her final game on the day.
Makera Standridge I 5’4 I PG I 2024 I Georgia Dominance 2023
Standridge was one of the best ball handlers on the day. Her skills allowed her to beat the press with the dribble. A player that is tough to guard off the dribble. Has a nice step back jump shot and does a great job of getting the defenders on their heels so she can blow by them. A true floor general.
Kymoni Freeman I 5’4 I PG I 2023 I FGC Miracle Black 2023
Freeman is a tough point guard that is always playing downhill. She knows how to get to the basket and score through contact. Makes a lot of tough shots around the rim but also controls the pace of the game with her floor general skills. A player that knows how to find her open teammates. A point guard that scores at all 3 levels.
Kennedy Armistead I 5’0 I PG I 2024 I Lady Grinders 2023
Armistead is one of the quickest players with and without a basketball. What stood out to me was her ability to help her team claw back after being down 20 points. She was the energy that her team feed off. She is always communicating and getting her teammates in the right spots. Plays well beyond her size and knows how to get up and pressure her opponents full court. Her quick hands create turnovers in the open court which lead to easy baskets.
Jayda Jackson Jayda Jackson 5'5" | PG North Paulding | 2024 State GA I 5’5 I PG I 2024 I Wood Elite 2024
Jackson is a player that caught my eye immediately. She is a hard-nosed guard that knows how to put her hand down and attack the basket. Uses her body well to absorb contact and finish at the rim. Also has the ability to shoot the mid-range jump shot or knock down the 3 ball. A true point guard that knows when to push the ball and also set up the offense. Jackson does a great job of controlling the tempo for her Wood Elite Team.
Aniya Southall I 5’1 I PG I 2027 I Mobile Lady Hornets 2026
Southall is the energizer bunny for her team. When her team was in a tight game earlier on the day, she knew how to settle her teammates down and control the game. A player that can handle the ball in traffic but also shoot the 3. She made big shot after big shot in a close game at the end of the day. A player that plays both ends of the floor.
