The Sandia Lady Matadors traveled to the Hobbs Team Camp and found a lot of success throughout the Tournament. They finished 6-1 throughout the weekend and their only loss came to Carlsbad by six points in the sixth game. They bounced back in the final game and defeated 5A State Runner-Up, Hobbs High School 49-37.
Team Roster: Hope Giddings Hope Giddings 5'8" | SG Sandia | 2025 State NM , Sydney Benally Sydney Benally 5'9" | PG Sandia | 2025 State NM , Audriana Wright Audriana Wright 5'10" | SF Sandia | 2025 State NM , Martina Sando, Amari Sanderson, Paige Garduno, Juliana Baca, Malia Meadowcroft, Mariah Miglliore, Jolie Felix and Iliana Lujan.
Coaches: Lee Kettig, Lindsey Kerwin and Marisol Silva.
Sandia defeated Centennial 31-16, defeated Goddard 50-19, defeated Artesia 50-28, defeated Mayfield 47-33, defeated Clovis 52-37, lost to Carlsbad 42-36 and defeated Hobbs 49-37. After the loss, the team bounced back two hours later and knocked off undefeated Hobbs on the historical Ralph Tasker Gym floor. The Lady Matadors went down early 15-2 by the sharpshooting Hobbs Eagles then crawled back into the game and pulled away during the second half. This is the first of four team camps that the Lady Matadors will be participating in this month. This lineup has seven freshman, one sophomore and three juniors from this past school year.
The teams starting five was their three freshmen, Sydney Benally Sydney Benally 5'9" | PG Sandia | 2025 State NM , Audriana Wright Audriana Wright 5'10" | SF Sandia | 2025 State NM , Hope Giddings Hope Giddings 5'8" | SG Sandia | 2025 State NM along with sophomore Melia Meadowcroft and junior Martina Sando. The bench also contributed with strong minutes throughout the first six games. In the first two games during day two, the Lady Matadors were outsized against Clovis and Carlsbad which resulted them in splitting those games. Meanwhile in their seventh game vs Hobbs, Hobbs outscored their first six opponents by 25 points or more in each game. In the game vs Hobbs, Sandia played their entire starting five the whole game with the Sandia bench cheering loud and being vocal from the sidelines. Sydney Benally Sydney Benally 5'9" | PG Sandia | 2025 State NM , Hope Giddings Hope Giddings 5'8" | SG Sandia | 2025 State NM and Audriana Wright Audriana Wright 5'10" | SF Sandia | 2025 State NM all contributed with scoring in double-figures in all seven games of the tournament. This is making them an early case for one of the top backcourts in the state with their off-season play. These two teams could eventually meet up again next season in the Metro Tournament and the State Tournament. Hobbs is a very impressive powerhouse, with a full package of scoring options with their guards and talented big’s. Hobbs also separates themselves with their relentless press defensively.
