In South Jersey, those games are already getting started, with a pretty prominent summer league having commenced this week. Here are a quick look at some players to watch within this league.
Riley Ahrens Riley Ahrens 5'10" | SG Delran | 2023 State NJ – 5-10 G/F, Delran (2023)
Ahrens took a much needed break off the court at the end of the high school season to focus on softball and get everything ready for the summer. She’s back and expected to play a massive role for Delran this coming season. Easily coming off her best high school year to date, we’re expecting big things from this versatile rising senior, someone who can shoot, drive, block, steal rebound, assist, literally anything on the floor. She excels across the board and is a player to watch.
Sophia Belbin – C, West Deptford (2023)
Belbin has a tough task in front of her for her senior season with the Eagles as she takes over as the main forward after Olivia Magee’s departure. Magee graduated this year and was a force to be reckoned with on the inside. Belbin will be relied upon much the same, playing an integral role in the post that West Deptford can use as a jumping off point for the offense to run through.
Darby Chhabria – 5-9 G, Camden Catholic (2025)
Chhabria made quite the impact as a freshman for the Irish, sinking three-pointers, playing shutdown defense, driving the lane and dishing out some assists in the process. She eased herself well into a big time program and looks comfortable amongst teammates like Kassidy Thompson Kassidy Thompson 5'9" | SG Camden Catholic | 2023 State NJ and Aaryn Battle Aaryn Battle 5'8" | SF Camden Catholic | 2023 State NJ . Chhabria needs to use the summer to build off that success and blossom heading into her sophomore campaign.
Riley Mulligan – SG, Haddonfield (2023)
It was a year of regression for Haddonfield last year, but Mulligan was a massive bright spot that this program will look to build around for her senior year. She’s one of the best pure shooters in the region and her 44 made three-pointers as a junior reflect that. Mulligan was a volume shooter, but was efficient with the ball in her hands. She’s a versatile threat, both off the catch-and-shoot or from creating her own shot on the dribble.
Taylor Tchou – G/F, Shawnee (2024)
Tchou is in quite the interesting place right now with the Renegades because of the returning players on the roster, factoring the seniors leaving, she’s the fifth-leading returning scorer. That means we could very much see her playing in a starting role or being one of the main bench players for Shawnee as a junior. Tchou has come in as a bench player thus far at Shawnee, with just 37 career points to her name. Things could change quite rapidly in the next few months.
Miyah Dawson – F/G, Rancocas Valley (2024)
Rancocas Valley will be without its best player from last season, Adriana Agosto, losing nearly 500 points of offense that will need to be filled in by players stepping up. Dawson made quite the jump in production as a sophomore and is looking like one of the main playmakers on the team heading into next season. We know that she can score in the paint and can get to the foul line, but how we’ll she’ll be able to command the post with more attention put on her is the biggest question that hopefully will be answered over the summer.
