This all-star charity event not only raises money for a great cause in MS, but also brings the best in the Garden State and Tri-State area together for great basketball. Here’s a quick look at the 2023/2024 Team Black roster.
Bella Mazur – Mainland (2024)
Bella has been one of the stars of the Jersey Gemz this summer and is returning this fall to a fantastic Mainland roster also including her twin sister, Ava. We have really enjoyed what we’ve seen out of the 2024 guard, someone who definitely uses her height to her advantage at the guard position. Her ball handing skills have stood out on the hardwood during the AAU season, but it’s her inside game and driving ability that really makes her stand out amongst the rest.
Ava Mazur – Mainland (2024)
Looks like the Mazur sisters landed on the same team for Hoops4MS, which already makes Team Black a stacked roster of talent. This shooting guard has given opponents nightmares from beyond the arc and is only getting better with time. Her release is smooth and very under control. There isn’t much to it, which is really effective. A quick release can make or break a shooter just as much as how smooth it is. Mazur executes in both departments.
Destiny Johnson – University (2023)
Johnson can go under-the-radar at University, but we’re looking at one of the premier shooters in North Jersey in this 5-10 guard. Everything came together in her junior year: the scoring, the shooting, the shot-blocking, the defense. It was exactly the kind of momentum she needed heading into the summer. On a high-octane offense like what Team Black presents, look for plenty of outlet passes to her and breakout layups or quick baskets in the paint.
Joi Johnson – Ewing (2024)
We’ve luckily been able to talk about Johnson plenty as Ewing was one of the best teams in New Jersey last season. Johnson was part of a trio of great 2024 prospects with the Blue Devils, but it’s her defense that really sets her apart on the floor. You’re getting a 15=point scorer along with a double-figure rebounder and just a fearsome interior presence. What more is there to ask for in a player that’s All-Conference and college-ready as a rising junior.
Hope Masonius – Manasquan (2024)
This team just keeps getting better and better, now moving on to Masonius, someone who is destined to break out as a junior for Manasquan. She’s shown plenty of signs of her peak performance this summer, but there’s really quite a lot to her game outside of her offense. Masonius has proved to be a great facilitator and is someone who on this team, is a top candidate to run the point. She combines that with precision three-point shooting as well as a strong defensive package that is highlighted by perimeter defense.
Zoe Brooks – St. John Vianney (2023)
The highlight of Team Black is Brooks, a recent NC State commit and a top-2 2023 prospect in New Jersey and top prospect nationally. We cant sing her praises enough because there are very few players with the package and pure ability that she does. Brooks is crafty, she’s quick, she can shoot, drive, stop and pump, do literally anything you need on offense. She’s also an aggressive defender, a reliable rebounder and knows how to disrupt an opponent. Words cannot do her justice, only video can, so check out the game film above.
