However, that doesn’t mean the calendar is shut down for basketball until the high school season begins. Practices have already begun and tournaments and leagues are still going on, like the Hoops4MS all-star charity event showcasing some of the best in the New Jersey. Here’s the first in a two-part look at who’s on Team Red for the 2023/2024 prospects.
Montana Nicks – Dwight-Englewood (2023)
Nicks carved out a name for herself over the past three years with Dwight-Englewood and has been on some other worldly tear in the three-point shooting department. You’re looking at a pure shooter, a volume shooter with efficiency, but she’ll knock down a midrange jumper, runner in the lane, or tough layup at the rim just as well. Her assists per game shot up nearly four in one season, something to keep a major eye on.
Iyanna Cotten – Franklin (2024)
Cotten might be listed as a guard, but she has all the skillset of a forward, including being a great shot-blocker. Her averages went up across the board, especially giant hikes in three-point shooting, scoring, passing and steals. Cotten is multi-dimensional, multi-talented and multi-dangerous with the ball in her hands. Even off-ball, she’s a nightmare to guard when watching her cut through opponents into open positions. After finding a spark as a sophomore, she’s going to blossom as a junior.
Tyonna Bailey – Immaculate Montclair (2024)
Tall guards run the world of women’s basketball in recent years and Bailey fits the mold of that to a T, which is a great thing considering the success she’s already had with Immaculate. A great, calm, composed shooter and scorer with an ability to get to the foul line, capitalize on open looks and take over the momentum of a game in an instant. Bailey’s as good of a pure scorer as anyone locally. It’s the other parts of her game: rebounding, passing and defense, we want to see her continue to work on, but don’t sleep on that defense. It’s still really sharp.
Mia Lewis – Immaculate Lodi (2024)
We love spikes in production, much of that caused to simply more playing time, which translates positively across the board. Lewis experienced that as a sophomore, but also gained confidence in the starting lineup, and her teammates helped get her baskets in transit and quick jumpers in transition. Lewis wows with her shooting and her defense, using that low-center of gravity to maneuver through traffic.
