The Lowcountry Summer Shootout emanated from The Fire House with a bit more than 10 teams converging on the home court of the Green Wave. Summerville HS gained notoriety this past season in Palmetto State girls basketball circles as the team came within one win of claiming the program’s first ever state championship.
We at Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to Dorchester County for what was a thrilling Saturday of basketball. Many 2024s are giving more and a number of them were on hand in Summerville.
Lyniah Kitt Lyniah Kitt 6'0" | PF Woodland | 2024 State SC – Woodland HS – Team USC Cross – Kitt caught the attention of many an onlooker when Team USC competed on the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit as part of the Triumph Region. She is an at-will scorer who knows how to put points on the board and is unafraid of contact that can put her at the free throw line. Stellar interior defense is another element to her overall game. Wilson has the ability to create her own shot as well. She proved to be one of the catalysts for Team USC’s offensive attack throughout the two-day meet at the home court of the Green Wave.
Morgan Jones Morgan Jones 5'6" | SG Northwood Academy | 2024 State SC – Pinewood Prep – TMP White – Jones played in 20 games in 2021-22 for the Panthers. A key component to her game is how she attacks the rim, but her scoring versatility occurs in how she will also shoot the ball from either midrange or long range. Jones displays her confidence as she will call for the ball. She hauls in her fair share of rebounds and thrives as a ball distributor. Defensively, she causes problems for opponents as well wither shot blocking and ball stealing capabilities. Because of SCISA’s reclassification, Jones will enter the 2022-23 campaign with the Panthers as a Region 3-AAAA competitor.
Andrea Duncan Andrea Duncan 5'7" | PG James Island | 2024 State SC – James Island HS – S.H.O.T.S. United – Duncan has impressed ever since she began her high school career with the Trojans as a freshman. That has continued now that she is a rising senior. Along with putting crooked numbers on the board, she puts herself in position to haul in rebounds and get her teammates involved. She is a force to be reckoned with on the defensive side and this shows itself when she comes up with key plays such as blocks on the perimeter. Duncan is also unafraid of contact which can put her at the free throw line, can convert on tough shots and will find her way around any defense enroute to the cup.
Alaina Graf Alaina Graf 5'7" | SF James Island | 2024 State SC – James Island HS – S.H.O.T.S. United – One of two Graf sisters currently on the S.H.O.T.S. United roster ( Tiana Graf Tiana Graf 5'6" | SG James Island | 2025 State SC is the other), there is certainly chemistry that translates to the AAU team given much of it is comprised of James Island Trojans. Graf is listed at 5-foot-7 and is confident in her ability to knock down shots from deep. She is also an efficient floor runner and understands how to make the correct passes at the right times when on the court. That height also comes in useful as a rebounder. Defensively, she is a consistent threat to steal the ball.
Maddy Hawes Maddy Hawes 5'11" | PF First Baptist | 2024 State SC – First Baptist – S.H.O.T.S. United – Hawes previously played at the high school level at Ashley Hall HS and has also thrived as a volleyball player in addition to basketball. She won the opening tip of her team’s matchup against Lowcountry Premier 16U and also had an occasion where she missed a free throw, corralled the rebound and converted on two points from the field. Hawes also had the first two points of that game. Hawes provides a significant paint presence and is ready to box out in case of a missed free throw. She will also have no problems absorbing contact and making her way to said free throw line. She displays her confidence as well with her willingness to call for the ball and make plays.
Makayla Waiters Makayla Waiters 5'6" | PG Stall | 2024 State SC – Stall HS – Lowcountry Premier 16U – Waiters had one of the impressive performances of anyone at the Lowcountry Summer Shootout. In her team’s matchup against SHOTS United, it appeared her team’s opponents had no answer for her. She proved herself to be an efficient distributor of the ball and came with up with steals that she would turn into transition buckets. Waiters also found a great deal of success putting the ball through the cylinder from behind the 3-point line and approaches the game with an all-around fearless attitude. At times, it feels as if there is more than one of Waiters on the floor as active on both ends of the court as she is.
Yannah Seaberry Yannah Seaberry 5'6" | CG First Baptist | 2024 State SC – First Baptist – TMP Black 17U – In her first season with the Hurricanes, Seaberry was integral in her team’s run to the SCISA 3A final. She will be part of SCISA’s new Region 3-AAAA as part of its reclassification. She puts plenty of points on the board and a good bit of those occur by way of the 3-pointer. Seaberry is another that does the little things – such as diving for loose balls. If she gets fouled, she is likely to increase her team’s point output via the free throw line. Seaberry notched 11 points in what was a hard-fought victory for TMP Black 17U against Lowcountry Premier 17U in what was one of the more entertaining matchups of the day in Summerville.
