Four years ago, when I first started with Prep Girls Hoops, I introduced different areas of the state and their top prospects. I wanted to again work through that this Fall and offer you a much more detailed look at the Hoosiers State’s different regions and the prospects who should shine this Winter throughout those regions. This article will focus on the ladies just West and Northwest of Indianapolis, specifically from Boone County and Hendricks County. There are 11 total schools spread throughout those three counties, but they are predominantly bigger schools, with four being from class 4A, five being from Class 3A, and two being from Class A.
Team success has found those two counties, with Brownsburg being the 2021 Class 4A state runner-up, Zionsville being the 2018 Class 4A state runner-up, as well as Tri-West (2021), Danville (2017 & 2018), and Lebanon (2016) all making it to the Class 3A Semi-State four of the last seven years. Additionally, the combination of those 11 schools have provided a great deal of talent throughout the years, with a number of girls moving on to college basketball of all levels. Recently, players like Kenna Kirby (Tri-West 2022), Ellie Wilkerson (Plainfield 2022), Ally Becki (Brownsburg 2021), Alex Richard (Avon 2021), Allison Bosse (Brownsburg 2020), Ella Collier (Danville 2020), Maddi Fulks (Bethesda Christian 2020), Madison Jones (Western Boone 2019), and Maddie Nolan (Zionsville 2019) have represented their areas well, with all of them continuing their basketball careers beyond high school. Becki, Bosse, Collier, and Nolan also represented their schools as Indiana All-Stars in their respective classes.
Still, though, there are a number of girls who go underrecruited throughout their careers, and this is an area where small colleges can find some real gems, plus there are typically multiple Division-I prospects in each graduating class from these two counties. With that said, I wanted to take the time to highlight a handful of girls who may not often grab the spotlight, but who deserve their share of recognition for their basketball abilities. All of these girls are strictly from Boone County or Hendricks County.
Jordyn began in the Pike system but moved into Zionsville last year. She has shown a great deal of improvement over the last 12-18 months, and she’s starting to get colleges to take notice. She has nice length, an athletically strong frame, plus she runs the floor well North/South and has some bounce to her as well. Offensively, she still needs a little skill work and to make her post-moves more instinctive, but she uses her athleticism to her advantage. Defensively, she’s a nice rebounder and an effective shot-blocker.
For the way Sydney plays, she has nice height, length, and a wiry-strong frame. She’s a fairly fluid point forward type who handles the ball a lot. She has good vision and is a solid passer, plus she can attack the basket and finish around the paint. The biggest thing offensively, would be for her to add a consistent perimeter jumper, because with that, it would alleviate a lot of ball pressure and allow her to create even more. However, she is always productive and very versatile, plus she can defend multiple positions.
Isabelle hasn’t been a big grassroots participant in high school, so opportunities to see her have been at showcase events or during the Winter months. She is a strong, tough-nosed, high-motor, versatile forward. She can play an undersized power forward role when needed, score it in the mid-post, and battle for boards. But she also has perimeter skill, she can take care of the ball, and she’s a good passer. She can knock down an open jumper outside, but she doesn’t shoot often out there. That could be coming this season.
The Quakers graduated their top six scorers from a season ago, so that leaves Payton as the most experienced returnee, and it allows her to be more of a focal point this season. She is an inside-out front-liner who can play at all three levels. She has the size, strength, hands, and footwork to play around the block. She also has the touch to hit shots and ability to get to the basket in one or two dribbles from the mid-post. Additionally, she has shown the ability to knock down an open 3-pointer in pick-and-pop situations.
I’m not sure if we’ll be able to see Kenzie during the 2022-2023 season, as she was unfortunately injured in early July. The last two years, however, she has been electric, putting up points in bunches, while still managing to run a team and affect every possession offensively. Defensively, she’s also very feisty, and she uses her speed and quickness to hound opposing ball-handlers. Once she does return, I can tell you she will be on a mission and trying to make up for lost time, so keep your eyes peeled for her in the near future.
