Continue ReadingAugust has already been quite the month for recruiting in New Jersey as we’ve already seen four big time prospects announce their college commitments via Twitter, not to mention the wave of offers different players have received thus far. It’s been great to see the support these players have gotten so far and great for the state to see the girls’ game continue to grow. Here’s a recap of what we’ve seen so far.
Nia Scott Nia Scott 6'1" | PF Shawnee | 2023 State NJ (2023 F, Shawnee) commits to Bryant
One of the biggest commitments we’ve seen so far this month comes from South Jersey forward Nia Scott Nia Scott 6'1" | PF Shawnee | 2023 State NJ , who on August 8, announced via Twitter that she’ll be continuing her basketball career at Bryant University. The Bulldogs play in the America East Conference, so Scott will have the opportunity to play amongst the likes of UMBC, Vermont, Stony Brook and more. She’s been a fantastic interior presence in her three years with Shawnee and is expected to be one of the premier forwards in the Olympic Conference this season.
Breana Delaney (2023 G/F, St. John Vianney) commits to Stonehill
Two days before Scott, St. John Vianney rising senior Breana Delaney announced her commitment to play for Stonehill College women’s basketball. The Skyhawks will be playing their first season as a Division 1 school this fall, moving into the Northeast Conference after previously being the Northeast-10 Conference in DII. Delaney has grown significantly with the Lady Lancers and should be one of their better three-point shooters this season.
Samantha Richardson (2023 C, St. Benedict’s) commits to Rider
Of those who have recently committed, Richardson was the lone prospect to stay in-state, announcing on Aug. 3 that she’ll be playing for Rider in the MAAC. There’s great competition within the conference between Manhattan, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, all three of which put together 20+ win seasons last year. Richardson already has plenty of experience against tough competition playing for St. Benedict’s, so she’s going to fit in just fine down on the block.
Jaylin Hartman Jaylin Hartman 6'2" | SF Blair | 2023 State NJ (2023 F, Blair) commits to George Washington
Arguably just as big, if not bigger than Scott’s commitment this month was Hartman, a standout at Blair, who announced on August 11 that she’ll be playing in the Atlantic 10 for George Washington. The A10 is one of the stronger mid-major conferences in college basketball, meaning better competition and tougher opponents. Hartman has been more than up for the challenge and made massive strides over the past year between high school and AAU ball. Anyone who’s 6-2 and can knock down long range shots is dangerous.
Paul VI’s Shariah Baynes & Eva Andrews Eva Andrews 5'10" | CG Paul VI | 2024 State NJ both receive D1 offers
The Eagles are continuing to get noticed and put South Jersey on the map as two of their 2024 guards, Baynes and Andrews, announced that they’ve received Division 1 offers this month.
Andrews was the first, having received an offer from North Carolina A&T, one of the top HBCUs in the country. She’s really shown out this summer and with her size as a guard, she continues to look to exploit defenses and opponents.
A day later, Baynes announced she received an offer from Towson, a CAA mainstay looking to head back to the NCAA Tournament for the second time after doing so in 2019. Her skillset running the point as well as her shooting has turned many heads across the state and within the region.
You’ll be seeing plenty more offers and commitment announcements this month, and if you miss any, be sure to follow PGH New Jersey on Twitter @PGHNewJersey for more news, analysis and more.
