So much to cover, so many prospects to go over, so let’s continue that in this article, the updated top five shooting guards in the 2023 class.
No. 1: Rylie Theuerkauf Rylie Theuerkauf 5'7" | SG Tenafly | 2023 State NJ – 5-7, Tenafly (No. 3 overall)
Wow. The only think you can say when watching Theuerkauf play is wow because she’s simply that good on a basketball court. As a junior, she averaged 30.4 points a game and on top of that, over a five-game stretch during the season, she had three 40-point games, including a 48-point, 13-rebound performance for the books. She can create, she can drive, she can draw contact, she can shoot, she can finish, she can literally do anything on a basketball court.
No. 2: Katie Ledden Katie Ledden 6'0" | SG Rutgers Prep | 2023 State NJ – 6-0, Rutgers Prep (No. 5 overall)
Ledden, being six-foot tall, has incredible benefits as a guard, namely the natural mismatches most places on the floor. Even when she gets down low, her frame is plenty tall enough to hang with some of the bigger forwards in the state. She just knows how to score and when to score. Need a basket in a crucial situation, Ledden is exactly the player who will come up with a big basket, be that from midrange, down low or beyond the arc, where she has impressive range.
No. 3: Julia Corsentino Julia Corsentino 5'9" | SG Rumson-Fair Haven | 2023 State NJ – 5-9, Rumson Fair-Haven (No. 10 overall)
Corsentino has made waves recently after her commitment announcement to Marist, but she’s been a prolific three-point shooter for quite a bit now at RFH. Coming off a season where she hit 77 threes, triple-digits could realistically be in play for her and 250 career three-pointers seems like a definite. Corsentino knows how to shoot and knows how to make it look easy. Big things are coming for this guard this season.
No. 4: Ally Sweeney Ally Sweeney 5'8" | SG Sparta | 2023 State NJ – 5-9, Sparta (No. 12 overall)
It’s great to see state championship teams return great talent and you can tell from watching games that players really begin to feed off each other as the playoffs wear on. Sweeney is a great example of this, maturing well into the season and seemingly performing at her best when Sparta needed her most. Two 30-point performances, excellent three-point shooting and an ability to both rebound and facilitate pushed her above the rest.
No. 5: Niyell McCargo Niyell McCargo SG North Brunswick | 2023 State NJ – North Brunswick (No. 13 overall)
McCargo knows how to get work done in the lane and knows how to get to the foul line, but this North Brunswick star shines the brightest on the defensive side of the ball, racking up steals and commanding the boards in a way unseen in recent Raiders history. Her improvements to her game have been substantial and noticeable. She looks more confident and more aggressive overall, knowing that she can use her size to play a more physical game or fare well in a post-up situation on defense.
