Last Friday, September 30th, we released the Fall rankings update for the Class of 2023. There were a handful of new additions, a few players who raised their “stock”, so to speak, so subsequently there was some movement throughout the list. I wanted to take this time to circle back and address all of the ranked prospects, position by position. Below is a look at 54 shooting guard prospects who make up 24.0% of the rankings this time around, with analysis on a handful to “keep an eye on” detailed at the bottom.
KEEP AN EYE ON:
From helping lead her team to the semi-state as a Freshman, to her Senior season beginning, Madelyn has put together a nice career, including 61 wins, three Sectional titles, and a Regional title under her belt. What will be next for Madelyn and the Lady Braves? She is a strong guard with some length, she’s a solid all-around athlete, and she plays with a lot of skill, understanding, and toughness. She can handle the ball and initiate the offense, but she’s also a very good perimeter shooter with some range. She does a lot of things well.
Nasiya is a strong and powerful guard with a knack for scoring the basketball. She has a quick first step and does a nice job of getting defenders on her hip and gaining leverage, but she can also create space with the dribble to get her shot away. I don’t know that she’ll ever necessarily be a point guard, but she does have really nice vision and some creativity in her game. She plays with a quiet toughness and a lot of physicality. She’s also a high-academic prospect who should draw a lot of interest for that in itself.
Maya is another nice guard prospect who can do a number of different things on the floor. She has an athletic frame with some length, and she moves around the floor fairly well in most directions. She can handle the ball a little and initiate/run offense, plus she can attack the basket for scores and absorb contact along the way. She rebounds her position fairly well, and she can defend a multitude of guards and wings, even an undersized frontline player from time to time. I think she has a lot of small college value due to her versatility.
Justice is an athletic combo guard who just makes plays. She isn’t overly tall for how she plays; however, she is extremely long at her height, and she plays much bigger than she is. She gives good energy at both ends of the floor, and she’s a capable and willing 84-foot defender who can bother a combination of point guards and shooting guards handling the ball. Offensively, she is more of an attacker first, and she is strong enough to take on contact and finish inside. A little more consistency on her jumper, and she’ll be hard to guard.
Logan is a tough-nosed, gritty combo guard who does a little of everything for her Lady Warriors team. She is a nice all-around athlete who moves well in most directions. She plays with a competitive toughness, and she can take on a variety of roles. She can handle the ball and initiate/run offense, but she’s best as a scorer with the ball in her hands. She can get into the paint and create, plus she has some touch outside and can consistently knock down rhythm jumpers. Logan will also get after it at the defensive end of the floor.
