Hastings looked even better than when I caught them at the Texas Invitational, they wound up winning the Silver in Division 2. This was my first look at Cy Springs, they had a down-to-the-wire game against Summer Creek earlier this season, and although SC and Pearland are the top 2 teams I’ve seen so far in 6A Region 3, the Panthers have to be considered as another early favorite
Abrielle Grissett-G (Hastings) [2023]
Grissett is an athletic guard that used her athleticism on both ends well, first of all, she defends baseline to baseline, and even understands how to take charges properly. She also used her hands nicely and came away with steals but understanding how to force players into traps caused some problems. She also scored off the dribble and her attacking strongly and finishing after contact also stood out
Layla Anderson-G (Brookshire Royal) [2024]
Anderson did a good job creating her shot in the set and the jumper looked good yet she also showed she could drop in transition with the “stop and pop”. She also set the defender up nicely to attack the basket from multiple angles using a deceptive first step, with either hand, and she finished strongly
Zamari Reece-G (Cy Springs) [2024]
Reece is showing she is a major PIECE to her team’s puzzle and her controlling the tempo as well as seeing the floor will play a huge part in how far they go. She has multiple scorers to choose from on her squad yet she too can put the ball in the basket either off the dribble or with the jumper. On the flip, she also does a good job defensively
Evonne Sidney-G (Cy Springs) [2024]
Sidney continues to elevate her game and falls into that “most improved” category for the second season in a row. I love her energy, she just goes hard but she’s strong off the dribble and finishes after contact. She also showed she could knock it down from outside numerous times but her rebounding against taller players as well as her defense will be another piece to their puzzle
Melanie Hodges (Cy Springs) [2024]
Hodges has also taken a major jump in her game, I really enjoyed watching her as a freshman but she’s more poised and simply will not back down against anyone. Her desire to go after the ball off the rim as well as her interior defense helps set the tone but her strength and ability to finish with players literally hanging on her was equally impressive
Amyah Weathersby-F (Hastings) [2025]
Weathersby showed me something at the Texas Invitational yet she showed even more as she stands around the magic number, which is 6’0, yet her college-ready frame as well as upside did some damage. Yes, she BATTLES for rebounds, well she also battles for loose balls, on the floor included. She finishes around the rim and did a good job defensively
