I had a chance to check out several teams at the Hoops 4 Hunger event yesterday as well. I’m looking forward to covering some of the impressive play there over the next couple of days. The holiday time is always a great time to just sit in the stands and watch games.
We took a look at the seniors earlier in the Parkview Tip-Off Classic: Top 2023s and the juniors in the Parkview Tip-Off Classic: Top 2024s evaluations. Here are some of the top performers taking the court in their second year of high school basketball.
Ja’Kerra played well on the interior for Hebron. She is a capable scorer on the block using her drop step to get angles on the rim for hard to contest scores. She is a constant on the glass on both ends and although she can out jump many players, she still does the basics with strong box outs. A strong player on the block who really thrives with spacing on the perimeter to use her post skills.
Highlights
Mia is fast with the ball in her hands. She made some really nice reads in transition where her playmaking ability stands out. She seems to have an understanding of when and how to slice the defense which lead to some easy scores for her teammates. Defensively she is very good on and off the ball. She finished with three steals but had at least three deflections that led to steals for teammates.
Highlights
Johanna looked good paying from the wing. She made some strong drives where she was able to slither through help defenders and still get tough shots to go. She also knocked down jumpers from the mid-range and beyond making it clear that defenders need to be in her space wherever she gets a touch. Here game was called early due to an opposing teams injury so I hope to catch them in a full game this season.
Aubrey was patient on offense taking what the defense gave usually after failed rotations to contest her looks. She speed in transition ahead of the break. She used her long arms well on defense as well turning defense into her own offense more than once. Hebron gets a lot of points out of great transition basketball. They really share the ball looking for the best scoring opportunity, but Aubrey has the tools to manufacture points for herself against stiffer defenses.
Hailee was everywhere in the first half of her game against Landmark. Her instincts on defense were very impressive as she ran through passing lanes grabbing steals on what seemed to be good passes. She is quick in transition and has ball skills to breakdown any defense or defender. She is a very good rebounding guard as well and likes to start the break by hitting the glass. Hailee seemed determined to not lose late in the fourth quarter. She wants the pressure that comes with winning close games and was a key factor in pulling out a come from behind win.
Ivona Djikanovic
Ivona Djikanovic
Ivona has a sneaky skillful game that can catch you off guard. She does a lot of things with what appears to be little effort. She opened up the game showing skill and toughness on some smooth layups in traffic. She penetrates well and does a good job reading help defenders to get her teammates open shots. She has a good looking jump shot as well and knocked down a couple over the course of the game. An intriguing player to keep an eye on.
I really like what Jasmine brings to the floor as a true interior player. She has the size to be effective on the in the paint and the hustle to make switches and defend on the perimeter in spurts. She guarded move for move at one point in a the game against GAC. She’s physical in the paint and can get some tough shots to go from her physical post play. Returning from injury she has a double double potential once she back to 100%.
Skye showed up in some big moments down the stretch. She had a pair of very timely steals. She knocked down a three from the wing and followed it up with a mid range jumper on back to back possessions to give her team a double digit lead for the first time in the second half. Quiet most of the game, she showed up and was a big reason her team came close to pulling off the upset against Holy Innocents’.
Highlights
Kalise Hill
Kalise Hill
Kalise handled the point guard responsibilities well on both ends of the floor. She defended with effort and looked to make ball-handlers uncomfortable. She forced passes or tough shots when guards looked to penetrate and played the lanes in help situations well. On offense she is a good distributor that likes to get the ball in the hands of her teammates. She is a scoring threat in transition and likes to get downhill.
Gabrielle Palmore
Gabrielle Palmore
Gabrielle is not the focus for Westlake’s offense but she sure came up with positive plays time and time again, when the Lady Lions needed it the most. She has a knack for being in the right place at the right tie which led to scores, steals, and assists for teammates all the same.
Jaden Cooper
Jaden Cooper
Jaden really looks for her shot from deep. She did not hesitate to get off the floor if she had a clear look at the rim. Playing opposite of Sevier, defenses are required to make long closeouts on every perimeter touch.
