Last years state tournament teams included: Desert Christian, Fort Thomas, Joseph City, Leading Edge Academy, St. Michael, Salome, Mogollon and Rock Point. These are my predictions for the top contenders to bring a home a state championship this season.
1) Fort Thomas: The Apaches are coming off a second place finish in the state with a 30-4 record. Fort Thomas was the #1 overall seed heading into the state tournament before running into a red hot Rock Point team in the state championship. The Apaches only lose 3 players from last years team and are my favorite to bring home the state championship this upcoming season.
2) Joseph City: The Wildcats are coming off a 25-5 season and a first round loss in the state tournament. The Wildcats are only losing two players from last years team which makes them poised for another very successful season. I anticipate the Wildcats competing for a state championship this upcoming season.
3) Rock Point: The defending state champions Rock Point Cougars are coming off a spectacular 19-1 season. They will be coming into the new season on a 15 game winning streak. The Cougars do lose 7 critical players from last years team, but I still expect them to defend their state championship this upcoming season and compete in a highly competitive 1A division.
4) Bagdad: The Sultans are coming off a 21-8 season, but are returning all but one player from last years team. The Sultans made a huge improvement in a year going from 2 wins in 2021 to 21 wins in 2022. I believe this team is a sleeper to contend for a state championship this upcoming season.
5) Salome: The Frogs are coming off a 16-4 season and were upset in the first round of the state tournament by St. Michael. The Frogs are returning all but two players from last years team and expect to be just as good as last years team. The Frogs will be a very competitive team this upcoming season and a contender for a state championship.
