Sadie Cox
The 5-foot-11 Lenox forward dominated in the Tigers’ win over Orient-Macksburg. Cox finished that game with 29 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. The two-sport athlete did most of her damage on the interior and got to the free-throw line a few times. Cox also grabbed eight rebounds, six of them of the offensive variety. The Tiger did multiple things that would help her team compete in any game. Even though this one was a bit of a blowout, what she does isn’t flukey in the slightest.
Aaliyah Riley Aaliyah Riley 5'7" | PG Johnston | 2024 State IA
The Johnston guard was picked on last season by opposing teams, at state, because of their belief that she wouldn’t hurt them on the perimeter. Riley led the Dragons in scoring in their win against Waukee Northwest with 21 points and made two of her four 3-point attempts. She looked confident in her ability to make shots, which might be all she needs to open up defenses. There aren’t many people who’ll stay in front of her this season.
Emma Donovan
The Walhert Catholic senior finished the Golden Eagles’ win over Waukon with a double-double. Donovon was one of two Golden Eagles with 18 points and also finished with ten rebounds. Most of the defensive attention from the Golden Eagles’ opponents will be on Claire Lueken after a standout freshman campaign. Donovan has an opportunity to excel this season. The six-foot forward is an athletic kid who can defend multiple positions and make plays that no other player on her team can. She makes hustle plays and makes her luck by playing hard every second she’s on the floor.
Alyssa Bartlett Alyssa Bartlett 5'7" | PG Southeast Polk | 2025 State IA
I recently highlighted Bartlett over her standout July, but she did something on Tuesday that I’d like to highlight. The sophomore shot poorly from the field but found other ways to help her team win against Indianola. She didn’t score a point, but she managed to help her team win by contributing to other aspects of the game. For instance, the 5-foot-6 guard led the game in rebounds with nine and assists with six. Although Bartlett didn’t score, she was a big reason behind the Rams’ win.
