GITG: Fresh Faces On The Rise

Gems In The Gym once again brought the basketball community together in Oakland, California, for the 20th Annual Fresh Faces Myles McGowan Classic. Over the past two decades, this event has established itself as one of the premier national fall showcases, consistently attracting talented prospects from across the country. The gym was loaded with middle school and high school players, with many projecting as future mid-major, high-major, and Division I prospects. I had the opportunity to spend the early portion of the day evaluating some of the top middle school talent in attendance, and several young players immediately caught my attention with their skill, athleticism, basketball IQ, and long-term upside. Here are the prospects who stood out to me:    The combo guard has reclassed to the 2031 and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Mitchell is a skilled high IQ combo guard who has a knack for attacking the rim. She has shown vast improvement on her perimeter game and is just scratching the surface of her potential. I love her toughness and ability to defend. As she continues to grow and develop she will be a surefire division 1 prospect.     Giometti is a big time prospect out of the bay area. She definitely elevated herself into the national spotlight with big time performances in her two games. Giometti is a high IQ combo guard who is a potent scorer. Her strongest attribute is her ability to make her team better and I expect her to be a big time prospect as she continues to grow.     Hui-Bytof is a wonderful foundational piece to build around. The high IQ point guard is a fantastic floor general who can facilitate, drive to the cup and finish around the rim. I loved the way she defends as her effort and ability to defend will carry her to high places in her basketball career. Another prospect to keep an eye one.     Ubaka was by far the best prospect in the Faces on the Rise Showcase. Already holding verbal offers from division 1 programs, she put the entire event on notice with her advanced skill set. An elite 3 level scorer, Ubaka displayed the ability to convert from long range, break down defenders to slash to the rim or even pull up to hit mid range floaters. She can handle the ball and displayed her shiftiness. Already playing 17U for Team NorCalAAU, Ubaka will be a surefire elite high major prospect. Coaches get involved early!     Douglas is an elite point guard with tremendous upside. She is incredibly quick and shifty which allowed her to get to rim at will to either finish or drop dimes to open teammates. I love her ability to guard 94 feet. Douglas' stock will continue to skyrocket as she is proving herself that she can compete on a national scale. What is impressive is this last club season she played up at 15U for Team NorCal AAU 3SSB. Another surefire division 1 prospect for coaches to keep a tab on.     Green is a big guard which colleges will love her skill set and platform. A physical guard who has the ability to bully her way to the rim but also hit three point shots from long range. Green is a complete guard to compliment her team. One of her most underrated attributes is her passing ability. Another surefire D1 prospect to keep an eye on as she is on the brink of having a storied prep career.
